Kewpie Doll Materials

Original Kewpie doll materials were made of bisque, in Germany.They had small blue wings. Arms were jointed at the shoulders, only. Kewpies made from celluloid were the next step. Celluloidwas one of the first plastics, and was wood based and highly flammable. Becausecelluloid Kewpies were fragile and would deteriorate from moisture and heat,they fell out of favor. Contemporary and antique Kewpie doll materials are often porcelain. Thewell known Danbury Mint issued a collectible porcelain Kewpie doll that wastwelve inches tall. Others are as small as one inch.
